Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and consider us as a possible family for your baby.
We are a happy, active, stable family of three and we all can’t wait to adopt a baby and become a foursome! Becoming parents is the best thing that has happened to us. There is nothing we want more in life than to grow our family and have another child to love and nurture.
Our Life Together
We met in college 21 years ago at the Army-Navy football game and felt an immediate connection. The day after we met, Eric told his dad he met someone he could marry. At the time, Eric was attending the U.S. Naval Academy and Melissa was going to school in Villanova, Pennsylvania. We embarked on a long-distance romance and, although it was a challenge at times, we always found a way to make it work. After college, we continued our long-distance relationship while Eric served 8 years as a U.S. Marine.
Although we met in our early 20s, we were married and became parents in our mid-30s. By this time, we had already spent most of our adult life together, became best friends and shared many wonderful experiences traveling the world and establishing our careers. We are grateful to have spent those early years seeing the world, living in many places, having unique experiences like climbing mountains in Russia and eventually marrying in Costa Rica. These years hold treasured memories for us, laid the foundation for our stable marriage and enriched us personally.
We have one biological son, Axel, who is four and a half years old. Axel is an outgoing, funny, smart and confident young boy. He likes to wrestle, ride his scooter, bike, swim, play with his animal figures and trucks in the sand and also watch Tom and Jerry. Since having Axel, we have struggled to grow our family. It has been a long road, but we can’t wait to have more children and are so excited to begin this new special journey of adoption.
In 2015, we finished building the house of our dreams on a 100-acre property in New England, which happens to be the property upon which Eric was raised (there is actually a road in town named after Eric’s family). It is an idyllic beautiful spot for a child to grow up on. We have several ponds full of fish and frogs with a ton of space for hiking and going on adventures, which we do regularly. The community is small and just about everyone knows each other.
Most of Eric’s extended family, including his two sisters and their families, still live in the area. His aunt lives next door and we often walk to her house and have fun swimming in her pool. Every Sunday night is “Family Dinner”, a special tradition we look forward to that alternates between our homes. The kids love it and enjoy various seasonal activities like playing in the snow, football, man hunt or playing with trucks in the sand box. Melissa’s extended family visits and stays with us often, especially for holidays and birthdays. They are a big part of our lives. Being grandparents is the highlight of our parents’ lives and they spend the majority of their retirements showing that to their grandkids and children. We are grateful our family has four doting grandparents to help us guide and nurture them.
As a family, we continue to travel a great deal and have seen what a wonderful way it is for our children to learn about different cultures, different people and the world in which they will live and grow. Since Axel’s birth, we have travelled to Austria, Costa Rica, Germany and across the U.S. We have spent time hiking in Maine and the Grand Canyon, gone to Sea World and the Wild Animal Park at Disney. We will continue to do the same with the new addition to our family.
Exercise is a big part of our lives and we strive to live healthy lifestyles as a family. All of the children in our families have attended road races in which we’ve participated and have watched the adults set an example of physicality and health in a positive and fun light. We often hike together as a family and Eric is always playing some sport outside with all of the kids.
About Melissa (by Eric)
I am the luckiest man in the world to have Melissa as my wife. She is a beautiful person inside and out and has selflessly encouraged me to be me and supported my every endeavor. When I travel for work, I leave knowing my house and family are in wonderful, caring and loving hands.
I never thought I could love her more, but after we became parents I knew even more definitively that I married the best person. Her relationship with Axel is special and it warms my heart to watch them together. She is a loving wife and mother whose single greatest priority and love is her family. Regardless of her day, she ensures Axel is well fed and bathed and still finds the time to have fun, read and put him to sleep while he lies in her arms.
Since I’ve known her, Melissa has enjoyed a wide variety of interests. She likes to stay active and enjoys running, going to the gym and hiking. Decorating has always been a favorite pastime for her, so having our new home to design and decorate is right up her alley. She is an avid reader and enjoys baking, especially now that Axel likes to be her helper. She has mastered my grandmother’s famous chocolate cake and makes us the best chocolate chip cookies you’ll ever have. She’s currently hoping to become a better gardener and loves to fill our house with fresh flowers.
Melissa is also one of the smartest and most organized people I know, which helps her to be a great wife and mother while juggling her other interests. More than anything she enjoys spending time with her family. Up to this point she has worked full time and enjoyed a successful career in Finance. Although this has been a very rewarding part of her life, she’s ready and excited to take on the role of stay at home mom and we’re working hard so she can do exactly that when the next addition to our family joins us.
Melissa treasures her time with her sisters and their children - and Axel loves his aunt and cousins, too. Their time together is usually full of story-telling, jumping rope, skateboarding (or trying to in Melissa’s case) and going to the rides on the boardwalk in her hometown in New Jersey.
About Eric (by Melissa)
Eric is the most capable man I know and I’m proud to be his wife. He has achieved so much, never ceases to amaze me and I’m convinced there is nothing he can’t do. He is a former Special Forces Marine who has climbed Mt. Everest, completed numerous Ironman competitions and ultra-distance races and started a company that was immediately successful, thriving and impactful to many people. He is the hardest working man I’ve ever seen in all aspects of his, and our, life. He is smart, strong, caring, generous and kind. The thing I love most about Eric is his strength. I am a worrier by nature, but when we face life’s challenges, I know everything will be okay because he is by my side.
Eric is an amazing father. I always knew he’d be a good dad, but he surpassed my every expectation. When Axel was an infant, Eric was wonderful at soothing him and had little tricks for getting him to fall asleep that worked like a charm and he continues to be a very hands-on dad. At our previous home, the neighbor kids would play outside and Eric would be out there leading the charge. He was like the Pied Piper – they flocked to him and he enjoyed every moment of it. Kids would come to our house and ask if Eric could come out and play. I can’t think of a better male role model for a child and Axel is proof of that. Eric is warm, openly affectionate and loving, while at the same time steadfast about teaching Axel and our future children how to be good people. Axel was shaking hands by the time he was two and already knows ladies go first. And boy does he love his Daddy.
Being outside and being with his family makes Eric the most happy. After climbing five of tallest peaks on the seven continents, finishing eight Ironman Triathlons and adventure racing around the world, his priority now is spending time with his family. There is nothing he enjoys more than that. Although he’s proud of his time in the Marines and climbing Mt. Everest, he is most proud of climbing Tunk Mountain in Maine with his then three year-old son.
Eric likes staying fit and keeping busy. He regularly swims, runs or lift weights and also enjoys keeping up with the seasonal work on our property. Trying to ensure a well landscaped lawn in warmer months and cutting trees for firewood during the winter.
Sharing a life and family with Eric is fun and secure and I enjoy every day with him.
What We Hope to Offer a Child
We both work very hard and feel this is an important thing to model for our children. We value a strong work ethic. Our careers, along with careful saving, have afforded us the financial resources to ensure Axel and his future siblings have the experiences and education needed to help them be successful. We believe in supporting whatever their life passion may be, and put an utmost importance on education.
Melissa has enjoyed her successful career up to this point, but is ready and excited to be a stay at home mom. Both of us love being parents and are committed to spending as much time as possible with our children.
We believe children should have fun and be happy and carefree, but also well-mannered and respectful. We will raise our child in a warm, loving, fun and exciting home surrounded by family and people who love him/her.
Thoughts on Adoption (closing)
Words can’t express our gratitude and respect for you and this tough decision you’ve made to consider adoption. Your choice is a gift for this baby and we promise to provide them with a loving home and a wonderful life.
We intend to openly communicate with him/her and answer questions on an age appropriate basis. They will be told from the start about the special way they came into our lives. Making sure they know their life started with a loving and selfless woman who wanted the best for them is very important to us. Depending on your comfort level, we’d love to share pictures, letters and updates with you. It’s our hope that you always feel good about your decision and know how happy and well cared for they are.
Thank you again for taking this time to get to know us.
